Mushroom Catnip Toy

Welcome to Day 26 of 31 Days of Halloween Crafts! Today we’re making mushroom catnip toys.

Materials:

- felt

- batting

- catnip

- embroidery floss

- needle + thread

Download the patterns for this project here.

Cut the top and bottom pattern pieces from one color of felt, and the long rectangle piece from a different accent color.

Add spots to the circle piece by making French knots with embroidery floss. Push the needle through from the back. Hold the needle horizontally and wrap the thread two or three times from below the needle. Holding the thread in place, push the needle back through or near the first hole, sliding the knot down and pulling the thread tight. Stitch as many knots as you want.

Using a machine or by hand, sew the two short ends of the rectangle together with 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Fold the last piece in half and stitch around the outside up through the end of the fold.

Use a basting stitch to gather one side of the loop, taking a few stitches at the end to secure.

Turn the mushroom stem right side out and insert the raw edge into the gathered opening you made, stitching them together to secure.

Stuff the stem, alternating batting and catnip.

Stitch the mushroom top on, leaving an opening so you can finish stuffing catnip and batting.

Stitch up the hole and give the toy to your favorite cat.
